Josh Barnett, son of Thomas and Laurie Barnett of Rockwall, a 1997 graduate of Rockwall High School, enlisted in the Air Force in 2001 and for the first eight years was involved in typical Air Force type functions.
Corporal Andrew Smith, grandson of Ed and Sue Smith of Heath, Texas, grew up in Chapel Hill, Texas, and graduated from high school there in 2005 and then attended Tyler Junior College for one year as his mother, Johanna, did not want him to enlist in the armed forces. But in the summer of 2006, he finally convinced her that he really did want to become a US Marine.
In the last issue of this paper, The Military View article was about Sergeant Bryce Marx, a US Army Ranger from our area. This article is about Staff Sergeant Jeremy Marx, brother of Bryce and also a US Army Ranger assigned to the elite 75th Ranger Regiment.
One of the major problems facing many of our warriors now fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan is maintaining two careers simultaneously: one in the military and the second in the civilian world. How can this happen, you might ask, and isn’t it unusual for someone in the military to worry about two jobs?
Roger’s Rangers, Mosby’s Rangers, Darby’s Rangers, Merrill’s Marauders and the 75th Ranger Regiment are names of famous American Special Operations units that trace their history from the American Revolutionary War to current operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Back in the 1970’s and 80’s the military sized their force strength in numbers sufficient to fight two wars at the same time using active duty personnel. The use of the Reserves and National Guard was not considered during the early phases of the wars and their employment was reserved for follow on actions.
We have been involved in an International War on Terror since September 11, 2001 and have had our military forces actively fighting in two separate areas of the world since that date. We have about 540,000 active duty men and women in the US Army, another 203,000 in the Marine Corps, 328,000 in the Air Force and 332,000 in the US Navy or about 1,403,000 men and women on active duty.
